THE APPOINTMENTS OF GOD CONCERING MEN

Read Hebrews 9:11-28 text Hebrews 9:27,28

A: Introduction

·        Have you ever wondered about your future? What about the next 1yr, 5yrs, 10yrs, death and what happens to you in eternity?

·        Is God interested in my future and is there anything He can or will do about it?

·        I know that God is interested in your future and has done something about it because of the His appointments concerning you.

·        The appointments of God are prior arrangements or eternal decrees, which He executes at the appointed time.

·        The appointments of God are far superior to presidential appointments. Let’s examine these appointments.

B: The Appointment of Man’s Physical Death

·        God decreed that man must die once, or, at least, undergo a change equivalent to death. Genesis 2:17, 3:19

·        Death is universal because sin is universal. Romans 5:12

·        Death is something that can be done only once, and therefore you should endeavor to die well. Revelation 14:13

·        Death is matter of comfort to the godly, that they shall die well; but it is matter of terror to the wicked, who dies in their sins. Revelation 14:10,11

·        God’s appointment of death cannot be avoided despite your ignorance or negligence. Luke 12:20

C: The Appointment of Man’s Judgment

·        God has appointed that after men die they shall come to judgment, to a particular judgment immediately after death and then to general judgment.

·        Your soul returns to God, as Judge, who determines its eternal state; and God brings men to the general judgment, at the end of the world. Acts 17:31

·        Those of you that remain unbelievers will be condemned. Psalms 1:5

·        Believe on Jesus and escape the general judgment at the end of the world. John 5:24, Romans 3:26

·        This is the unalterable decree of God concerning men-- they must die, and they must be judged.

·        Judgment is appointed for men, and you must believe it and seriously consider this fact.

D: The Appointment of Christ As Man’s Sin Bearer

·        The appointment of God concerning Christ bears some resemblance to the appointment of death. Jesus must be once offered, to bear the sins of many.

·        He was not offered for any sin of his own; he was wounded for our transgressions. Isaiah 53:5

·        God laid on him the iniquity of all his people; and these are many, though not so many as the rest of mankind. Isaiah 53:6,11

·        Jesus had no sin of his own, yet he stood charged with the sins of many; he was the Lamb of God that bore upon him the sins of the world. John 1:29

·        Repent, cast your sins on Jesus, by faith, and ask Him to bear them away and make you pure and holy.

E: The Appointment of Christ’s Return

·        God has appointed that Christ shall appear the second time without sin. Acts 1:10,11

·        Jesus’ second appearance will be without any charge upon Him, because He fully discharged it the first time.

·        Jesus’ second appearance will be glorious. 1 Thessalonians 4:16

·        Jesus is coming again, are you eagerly looking for Him?

F: The Appointment of Salvation

·        God has appointed many to salvation, Christ is their sin bearer and they look for Him. 1Thessalonians 5:9

·        It is the distinguishing character of true believers that they are looking for Christ’s return.

·        Why do I have to look for Jesus in order to be saved? Was I not saved when I believed in Jesus?

·        Our salvation is an ongoing demonstration of God’s grace. (Past-Penalty, Present-Power, Future-Presence). Eph. 2:8, 1Cor. 1:18, text, 1 Thess. 4:17

·        God will then perfect our holiness, happiness; our number shall then be accomplished, and our salvation completed. Colossians 3:4

·        When the roll is called up yonder do you want to be there?

G: Conclusion

·        The appointments of God cannot be cancelled, postponed, voided nor evaded. They are sealed will be executed.

·        The appointments of God, death, judgment, Christ and salvation, are for our good, embrace them.

·        You, who are not saved, ask God through Christ to bear your sins away so that you may be saved.

·        You, who are saved, persuade men to flee the judgment to come because you know the terror of the Lord.
